New Zealand’s largest university - in its largest, and most multicultural, city

Auckland is New Zealand’s largest city by far and is the commercial hub of the nation. Located on a beautiful harbor, with a temperate climate, Auckland has a population so diverse that it is often ranked among the ten most multicultural and diverse cities in the world. Fun fact - more Pacific Islanders live in Auckland than in any other one place in the Pacific.

The University of Auckland is big and prides itself on academic excellence. With more than 40,000 students, it is more than double the size of any other university in New Zealand, and with that comes a wonderful selection of course offerings in everything from business, where faculty enjoy using case study and group projects in many of their courses, to engineering, health sciences, fine arts, from marine science to Māori and Pasifika Studies. The University has been recognized internationally for its strengths in sustainability, innovation and entrepreneurship. Ranked first in the world in the Times Higher Education University Impact Rankings in both 2019 and 2020.

Being able to leave my comfort zone at home and school to travel and study in New Zealand was an invaluable experience. ”

Villanova University Student, University of Auckland

  • Although Auckland is a bustling city of 1.5 million people, there are wonderful large inner city parks and easy access to beautiful beaches allowing for swimming and surf options for most of the year.

  • With over 200 clubs and sports teams on campus, there's an activity for every taste. From hiking, canoeing, photography, and politics, to cosplay, drinking wine or eating desserts, clubs help balance your studies and grow your network.

  • The Study Abroad Students’ Society (also known as SASS) creates an inclusive community for returned, outgoing, and incoming study abroad and exchange students through fun trips, events, and social mixers.

  • Auckland is the transport hub of New Zealand with easy access to all parts of the country, as well as flights to Australia and the Pacific. The two week semester break and easy access means that many students spend a week traveling around the South Island and a week snorkeling the Great Barrier Reef in Australia or exploring the gorgeous Pacific Islands.

  • The university is home to the Unleash Space, a dedicated space on campus for makers, creators, builders, fabricators, and designers that is free for students to use.
