Courses

The typical credit load is 16 for the fall and spring terms and 32 for the full academic year.

• Please review your courses with your academic or study abroad advisor to ensure they will transfer back to your home school and that you are following your home school’s policies.
• Please be flexible – we can’t guarantee specific courses. If your participation in the program depends on a particular course, be sure to make a note on your online preferences form.

Special Considerations

Assessment method(s) for classes may be indicated in the study abroad catalog, or on the course syllabus. Methods vary between essay, examination, project work, or a combination.

• You must take examinations attached to their classes whenever the exam is scheduled during the period of study.
• Because exams typically take place in May and June for all courses, fall-only study abroad students will be assessed by coursework or other requirements prior to departure in December.
• Spring exams are usually held throughout the months of May and June, after the month-long spring break. Exam timetables will not be released until the middle or end of the semester.
• Spring semester students who are assessed by coursework only (i.e. no exams) may return home from the start of spring break, but will not receive a refund for their unused housing.
• Spring Semester Internship: Complete an Internship placement arranged by Arcadia and related 4-credit Internship Cornerstone course for academic credit. See the Internship Placement Guide for information about placement details.

Design

• Students wishing to take courses in Design will be required to take all of their courses within the Design department.

Studio Arts

• Studio Arts: enrollment is for a full academic year only.
• Only register for FA51012A Fine Art (32 credits).
• Concentrations in: drawing, painting, film, installation, performance, photography, printed and constructed textiles, printmaking, sculpture, video or a combination.
• Students in this department cannot enroll in the internship option.

When selecting courses, it is important to pay attention to course levels and pre-requisites. UK undergraduate degrees are 3-year programs in which students do not typically take modules (courses) outside of their major. The module catalog categorizes modules into levels based on the year the module is taught in the degree. There is a general progression from Year 1 to Year 3, although it is not equivalent to the more strict delineation of 100, 200, 300, 400 level courses, as is common in the United States.

You can choose modules from all three years if you meet the pre-requisite(s) listed in the module description; however, you should be aware that Goldsmiths degree students in Year 2 and Year 3 of their degree have taken a significant number of modules in that department.

When completing your Academic Preferences Form, keep in mind that Goldsmiths does not have course codes. In the course code section of the form, please enter the academic department in which the course is taught.

Internship Module

You must enroll in the Internship Cornerstone Course if you select an Internship placement.

Enrollment Process

Goldsmiths registers you in classes you select in your Academic Preferences Form; it is important that you list one alternate for every preferred course totaling eight courses. It can be difficult to change course preferences, and there is limited course availability after the application deadline. Your Program Manager will likely be able to provide your course schedule prior to arrival.

Miscellaneous

Portfolio for Studio Art and Design

• You must submit a digital portfolio including at least 10 examples of recent original work relevant to what you will be studying.
  • Include the size and media of each piece along with any notes to clarify the content as well as any other information you think might be relevant.
• You can submit the portfolio electronically or mail in a CD/DVD directly to your Program Manager. Contact your Program Manager for more details.
